Craft Organization Ideas: Simple Storage Solutions for Supplies

date icon   August 19, 2024

How do you store a lot of craft supplies? When I got into crafts through customizing traveler’s notebooks and other small craft projects, I quickly accumulated a variety of small supplies. Essential tools like scissors, bone folders, tapes, and glues were easy to organize with drawers or on my IKEA pegboard. However, managing smaller or extra supplies became a challenge. I realized I needed innovative craft supply storage ideas. My workspace was cluttered, making it hard to find what I needed when inspiration struck. That’s when I realized I needed a better craft storage system to keep everything organized and accessible.

My goal was to create a system where supplies were easy to access but also neatly stored away when not in use. This way, I could focus on my projects rather than dealing with the frustration of searching for missing tools or supplies. By maintaining a structured storage method, I would also be able to assess my inventory at a glance, preventing unnecessary repurchases. Additionally, a well-organized workspace would help streamline my creative process, reducing distractions and making crafting more enjoyable overall.

Before: The Basket Overflow

Initially, I stored all my extra and spare supplies in a small basket. It seemed convenient, but the basket quickly became a catch-all for washi tapes, spare glue sticks, and more. As the supplies piled up, finding what I needed became increasingly frustrating. I would often dig through layers of items, only to discover I already had something I had just repurchased. The disorganization not only affected my creativity but also slowed down my projects. It was clear that a more structured approach was necessary.

Beyond the inconvenience, I noticed how clutter directly impacted my motivation. A messy workspace made me less inclined to start new projects, knowing I would have to shuffle through a pile of supplies before getting started. I also found myself wasting time cleaning up rather than crafting. Eventually, I decided I needed a better system to manage my supplies, ensuring they remained accessible while staying neatly stored away when not in use.

Repurposing Old Items for Craft Storage

craft supply storage idea 1: organizing punch boards using eyeshadow palette tray

One of the first steps I took was repurposing an old eyeshadow palette organizer to store my We R Memory Keepers punch boards and paper cutter. At first, I wasn’t sure if it would work, but the compartments turned out to be the perfect size for these tools. This approach saved me money by avoiding the purchase of additional storage solutions while also making use of an item I already had. It felt good to find a practical use for something that might have otherwise been discarded.

This organizer made it much easier to find and access my punch boards without cluttering my workspace. Before, I often had to move things around to locate them. Now, I could just slide them into their designated compartments, keeping them neatly arranged and within easy reach. The compact size of the organizer also meant I could place it on a shelf without it taking up too much space.

Since repurposing the eyeshadow organizer worked so well, it also made me rethink how I store other crafting tools. Instead of immediately buying new storage options, I started evaluating existing containers and organizers to see if they could be repurposed. This not only helped me stay organized but also reduced unnecessary spending on storage solutions.

Using a Dedicated Supply Box for Smaller Essentials

Decluttering and Preparation

Before setting up the supply box, I first went through my smaller crafting essentials and decluttered unusable items. I found a dried-up glue stick with a broken cap that was no longer salvageable, so I tossed it out. I also took the time to clean my tools, such as wiping the tip of my glue gun and sharpening my art knife for later use. This extra step ensured that everything I stored in the box was actually useful and ready for crafting sessions.

I headed to Joann and purchased a 14″x10″ supply box with stackable shelving. This box was exactly what I needed for smaller crafting essentials that previously got lost in my cluttered basket. Its clear design allowed me to see everything at a glance, making it much easier to keep track of my supplies.

I started by sorting my supplies into categories and assigning them to different shelves within the box.

Sorting and Organizing Supplies

On the top shelf, I placed items I frequently use, such as spare scotch tapes, white-outs, extra labels for my Motex label maker, and art knife blades. Previously, these small items would get buried in my old storage basket, making them difficult to find when I needed them. To maximize space and ensure everything fit neatly, I removed any extra packaging. This small adjustment made a significant difference in how much space I had and kept the top shelf looking tidy.

Now, whenever I need an item, I can grab it quickly without rummaging through a disorganized pile. The top shelf’s layout also keeps my most-used items visible and accessible, reducing the time spent searching for them.

bottom part of the supply box

The bottom shelf of the supply box now houses my extra glue gun and glue sticks. These items are essential in many of my crafting projects, so having them stored neatly in one place has been incredibly helpful. Before, I would often have to double-check where I placed my glue gun or search for missing glue sticks. Now, everything is stored in an orderly way, making it easy to grab and use without extra hassle.

One of the best things about this storage solution is that it has plenty of room for more supplies as my collection grows. The stackable shelving allows for flexible organization, and I can easily rearrange items as needed. This adaptability ensures that my storage system evolves with my crafting needs, preventing future clutter. Having this extra space also means I won’t have to constantly search for new storage solutions every time I get new supplies.

Extra Things I Want to Try

As I continue refining my craft supply storage, I might consider labeling different sections to make everything even more accessible. Clear labels could help me quickly identify where each item belongs, saving me even more time when setting up or cleaning up my workspace.

Additionally, I’ve been thinking about donating or giving away some of the items I don’t use frequently anymore. For instance, I have around 20 rolls of tape that I barely use. Passing them on to someone who would make better use of them could help reduce clutter and create more space for tools and materials I use more often.

After: A More Efficient Crafting Setup

Since implementing these craft supply storage ideas, I’ve noticed a huge improvement in how I work on my projects. No more rummaging through a cluttered basket or wasting time searching for specific items. My crafting area is now more organized and efficient, which has made the entire creative process more enjoyable. I can start new projects without worrying about clutter, and everything has its designated place, making cleanup much easier.

Another unexpected benefit is that I can now keep better track of my supplies. Before, I would occasionally repurchase items I already owned simply because I couldn’t find them in my messy storage basket. Now, I can see everything I have at a glance, preventing unnecessary purchases and helping me save money in the long run.

If you’re struggling with organizing craft supplies, consider investing in storage solutions that fit your needs. Whether you repurpose items you already have or purchase dedicated storage boxes, taking the time to organize your crafting essentials will improve your experience and productivity. Effective organization will save you time and frustration, making your crafting journey more enjoyable.
